| What is Colonic Hydrotherapy? | ||
| A gentle, safe internal bath of the colon (or large intestine or bowel) by means of warm, filtered water. It is not habit-forming, nor does it disturb the electrolyte balance. | ||
| Historical records concerning the practice of washing out the lower part of the intestinal tract are found in a papyrus from ancient Egypt (as early as BC 1500), in the annals of Hippocrates and Galen, in the Gospel to the Essenes and in ancient Chinese and Indian writings. | ||
| Colonic Hydrotherapy or Irrigation should not be confused with an enema. Enemas empty only the lower 12 inches whilst Colonic Irrigation cleanses the entire length of the 5-foot colon. To quote Dr. Norman Walker, a noted American physician and naturopath: “One colonic irrigation is equivalent to 30 enemas!” | ||
| Who can benefit? | ||
| Everyone. Of all the organs in the body, the colon is the largest perpetrator of disease. Most people do not remember what it is like to have a clean, healthy colon and a feeling of true well-being. The colon is the sewage system of the body. Ideally, we should eliminate after every meal – two or three times a day. Most consider themselves to be in good working order with one bowel movement a day - many do not even achieve that frequency regularly. Like any rubbish bin, if it is not emptied it produces stagnation with subsequent decay, putrification and the formation of poisonous substances. | ||
| If the colon is not kept clean, the decay and putrification are not contained just within the colon, but spread rapidly to other organs, causing auto-intoxication or self-poisoning. This self poisoning can eventually lead to depression, irritability, lack of energy, lack of enthusiasm, bad breath, breathlessness, bloating, spotty, unclear looking skin, stiff joints, premature ageing, to mention but a few effects. | ||
Apart from the preventative power of Colonic Hydrotherapy, it is also a great help to anyone who wants to: maximise physical efficiency and performance, such as sports people; or those who want to look their best and glossiest such as actors, models etc; or anyone who needs to maintain a sharp and alert mind for professional tasks; or anyone on a detox or slimming programme; or those who spend hours exercising and still cannot achieve ‘a flat tummy.’ |
||
| All this comes about because the body has been relieved of a great burden of toxic matter. | ||
| Why not just take laxatives to empty the bowel? | ||
| Laxatives are habit-forming, weaken the bowel, can be irritating and not always effective. Colonic Hydrotherapy is not habit-forming, it strengthens the bowel because it works by stimulation, is always effective and leaves people feeling lighter and brighter immediately. | ||
| How many treatments will I need? | ||
| This is a question often asked by people calling in for an appointment. No one can realistically determine how many treatments a person will need until they actually have a first treatment and their condition has been assessed. But, even one treatment is better than none. | ||
| How long does a colonic last? | ||
| The colonic itself usually takes about 45 minutes – but could be shorter or longer depending on the person’s diet and lifestyle.. | ||
Margie had a client who was drinking three litres of freshly prepared vegetable juice per day and had one meal per day consisting of grains, beans, seaweed and vegetables. His colonic would take not more than 20 minutes. |
||
| She also had another client who hadn’t had a bowel movement in a month – and the colonic took almost two hours | ||
| Is there any aspect of the treatment which could be embarrassing? | ||
| It is so discreet and streamlined – you could be seen on TV. A hospital type gown open at the back is provided and is worn for the duration of the treatment. Thus, the client’s modesty is preserved at all times. | ||
| It is so discreet that some people like to come with friends, spouse or family members and chat throughout the session. | ||
| Unlike an enema, there is no mess or odour. | ||
| What is the quality of water used? | ||
| The water employed is highly filtered, having passed through 3 separate filters. To revitalise the filtered water and to remove the ‘memory’ of contaminants prevalent in mains water, a Grander purification unit is also used. | ||
| Will the colonic 'wash out all the goodness'? | ||
| Some people are concerned that colonics may wash out all the healthy intestinal flora. | ||
What happens is just the opposite: A clogged-up colon encourages the formation of harmful bacteria and inhibits the formation of healthy flora. Colonics, by cleaning out the bowel, inhibit the formation of harmful bacteria and promote the proliferation of friendly flora. |
||
| This improved condition then allows a better absorption of nutrients and provides better elimination. | ||
| Is the treatment painful? | ||
| During the course of the colonic, there is the feeling of having to go to the toilet, which is not painful but just a bit uncomfortable. Constipated people sometimes enjoy this feeling, because they do not have it often. | ||
| Will I leak after the colonic? | ||
| Some water usually remains in the colon at the end of the treatment. This is eliminated on the toilet. | ||
| Will I have a bowel movement the day after a colonic? | ||
| After a good colonic, it may take a couple of days for a bowel movement to return. In such a case, it usually indicates a weak and sluggish colon requiring strengthening and healing. However, for those with a normal functioning colon, bowel movements should return quickly. | ||
| Will I lose weight? | ||
| Colonic Hydrotherapy is the most rapid and effective way of cleaning out waste matter, gas, mucous and toxic substances from the colon. This is what is lost during a treatment, not body fat. | ||
Dr Bernard Jensen speaks of one of his patients losing 34 pounds of waste matter during a colonic. Margie has had a number of cases in which people found themselves to be 8 pounds lighter after a colonic. Someone who has three bowel movements per day will obviously lose less than someone who has one bowel movement every two weeks. |
||
| To lose excessive body fat, however, requires colonics accompanied by healthy eating and exercise. | ||
| Will my skin improve with colonics? | ||
| The skin is an important organ of elimination of waste material. Skin eruptions may occur due to toxins being released from the colon, liver and kidneys, but after their elimination, any skin complaint should swiftly disappear. | ||
| Cleansing the colon diminishes the burden placed upon all organs of elimination – skin, liver, kidneys, lungs. This is why people come in grey...and go out pink. | ||
| What happens in the colon starts with what goes into the mouth. No one would dare put the wrong fuel in their car for fear of damaging the engine; but few worry about what sort of fuel they put into their bodies. A diet of fresh organic foods – grains, vegetables, fruits, meats and fish – would be a more desirable fuel for the human body. As opposed to junk and processed foods containing additives, preservatives, artificial colourings and flavours, white flour, sugars, herbacides, fungicides, artificial fertilisers, flesh from animals and fish bred on hormones and anti-disease drugs. This is made worse by excessive alcohol and drug consumption. |
||
| Every time we open our mouth to eat or drink something we should take a few seconds to ask our colon whether it is happy with our decision or not. | ||
| 2. | ||
| Any given food, even "The healthiest," can have opposite bio-chemical influences in different metabolic types. In effect, one person’s food can be another person’s poison. | ||
| When an improved diet and supplementations do not provide optimum results, Margie advises clients to undergo a Metabolic Typing Test, which is an individually designed nutritional programme utilising a bio-chemical analysis of the person’s own design physiology. It identifies the person’s unique metabolic type and corrects specific bio-chemical imbalances. She's seen many a happy colon with this! | ||
| 3. | ||
| Stress, worry and unhappiness will also upset our digestive system and cause the muscles of our colon to constrict and go into spasm. She has some stressed, over-worked clients who, when in London, present digestive and elimination problems, but which miraculously disappear when they are on holiday or change something fundamental in their life-style. | ||
Magnetic Resonance Therapy, which Margie uses in her clinic, is an excellent complement to Colonic Hydrotherapy because it acts on the neuro-vegetive system with anti-stress effects, and stimulates digestive and bowel peristalsis. |
||
| Margie also discuss with clients their spiritual direction. We can eat the best foods, but if we are negative and bear grudges we end up poisoning ourselves anyhow. Gratitude is a great anti-stress medicine. | ||
| 4. | ||
| Our teeth are for chewing, not only for smiling. Without adequate chewing, even the best foods cannot be digested properly. | ||
When food is not chewed properly, the blending of food and saliva is inadequate; and the food particles which go from the mouth to the stomach are too large for the stomach to handle. The stomach then has to pass the undigested particles into the small intestine where the absorption of nutrients into the blood stream is supposed to take place. But as the mouth and stomach have not done their respective tasks, the small intestine cannot take on the overload and so dumps it into the colon. The poor colon gets one undigested meal after another. As it has no other organ to pass the buck to, the colon rebels by producing IBS, gas, bloating and constipation, which eventually becomes chronic. |
||
| Chewing is therefore vital for good health, because without good digestion there can be no proper absorption of nutrients. | ||
| An American couple I knew in Geneva had been interned in a Japanese concentration camp in Manila, together with 2,500 others, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Only 500 survived by the end of the war in August 1945. Margie asked them what was their secret for survival. They said: "The will to live and chewing." They would even chew water to extract some nutrients. |
||
Another lady in Paris had suffered all her life with digestive problems. Her naturopath put her on a diet of grains and vegetables and told her to chew each mouthful 200 times! She did this religiously and after three years she developed a fully-functioning digestive system. |
||

| Nature requires that we move, stretch, bend, lift etc. Like an automatic, self-winding watch, we must be active always. We have to choose whatever exercise is most suitable for us – but move we must. The colon loves abdominal exercises and stress is relieved by exercise and deep breathing. Exercising tones the muscles and strengthens the body. Modern sedentary lifestyles create sluggish and inefficient metabolic systems. |
||
| 6. | ||
| If we were living in an ideal world we would have access to good fresh food,unpolluted air, pure water and a stressfree environment to provide our bodies with optimal nutritional support for cellular repair and healthy cell function and would thus delay the ravages of ageing. But, lamentably, we do not have such a world; we have to make realistic compromises, consisting of, for example, regular intake of pre-biotics, pro-biotics, soil based organisms and other nutrients. A competent Nutritionist is a treasure of our times. | ||
| 7. | ||
| Nature intended for us to have bowel movements in a squatting position. This is the only position which provides full support for the bowel, enabling a complete evacuation. Until modern toilets were invented, our ancestors used only the squatting position. Sitting on a toilet with our feet on the floor leaves the bowel unsupported, thus promoting incomplete evacuation. The only solution readily at hand now is to place a stool under our feet, so that when seated on the toilet and slightly bent forward, our thighs can support the bowel. This is as close as possible to the original squatting position. | ||
| 8. | ||
| Last but not least: It is important to have colonics regularly. Colonics are indispensable for vibrant health, good complexion, bright clear eyes, rejuvenation and much more. Some people think if they follow a good diet and exercise regime, they can do without colonics. Not true. Waste deposits can get trapped in the colon and cause ‘a traffic jam’ no matter what they eat. | ||
